Orange County REMC Sends Youth to Visit Washington D.C.

Indiana Youth Tour provides young Hoosiers the opportunity to visit the nation’s capital, experience American history, learn more about government, and gain a better understanding about their electric cooperative. The 2022 Indiana Youth Tour was June 16-23.

Indiana sent a delegation of students from throughout the state. The students, selected by the local electric cooperatives, traveled to Washington D.C. for the weeklong experience and convene with students from up to 46 other states. Orange County REMC selected Emma Sowders for this experience who will be a senior at Mitchell High School. Emma is the daughter of Matt and Jean Sowders.

Orange County REMC is pleased to provide this opportunity for our local youth. It’s a great trip and a wonderful chance to see the sites, make new friends and learn how everyone, even young people, can make a difference in the political process.

Students visited the Flight 93 Memorial, Gettysburg Battlefield, Arlington National Cemetery, National Museum of the Marine Corps and Smithsonian museums. The delegation also toured the National Mall memorials, took a night cruise on the Potomac River and much more.

The Indiana Youth Tour students also participated in a youth event hosted by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association and spent a day on Capitol Hill, where they had an opportunity to meet with Indiana’s congressional delegation to ask questions and share their thoughts on a variety of timely issues.
